A life with ambition is good but without a clear idea of what it is you are working towards, it can be disastrous. This way, you end up working so hard but along the way you realize that you are not heading anywhere.
Those dreams that you have been chasing are not even close to coming true.
When I graduated, I wasn’t really sure about what I wanted to do with my degree. All I knew was that I wanted to get a job, move out and start a life of my own. As it happened, I was lucky enough to get a job even before I graduated.
Over the course of two years now, I was pretty sure that I had found my passion and what I wanted to do with my life. But life never woks out the way we want, now does it? Of late I have been feeling stuck.
I have reached a point where the job I enjoyed so much before is no longer fun. I have been considering quitting or getting another job but I am yet to make up my mind about that.
Why am I telling you this?
I have been working for two years now and with the way I am feeling these days, those may well turn out to be two years of my life wasted in a career that I don’t like. I don’t want it to come to that because that would mean starting over.
I am still weighing my options as well as seeing a career coach to determine if there are things I can change to start enjoying my job.
How many times have you felt like this? (You may not be going through exactly what I am going through but may be are in a similar situation)
Maybe you feel that no matter what you do you just can’t seem to catch a break. Everyone around you expects you to have reached a certain level yet you just can’t figure out a way of making that happen.
Maybe you know what you want to do but are stuck at ways of getting there.
We can all agree that life is worth living when you are psyched about chasing your dreams. And it all starts with changing your mindset. Here is how;
1. Work towards becoming who you want not what you think you should be
The only way that you can truly follow your dreams is by living them. Because if you are simply going through the motions whether at work or when trying to make that dream of yours come true, rather than living and practicing your values, I can assure you that it will be very hard to find success.
For instance, if you went through university, pursued that course because you were ‘meant’ to, success is highly unlikely. You might be lucky to get a job after that that even pays really well but deep down it will never feel like you have actually achieved success.
Success is living a life with meaning and being present. Ask anyone that you consider successfull and they will tell you that they have had to live fully without apologizing or going through the motions. They were sure of what they wanted and pursued it with determination.
Rather than going with the flow, why not write done everything that you want to do and find ways of pursuing that.
This is what it means to do what you actually want to rather than what you should.
2. If something is not worth the effort, you probably didn’t care that much in the first place
Are there things in your life you are determined to work on but then again you end up giving up? You don’t dedicate time or effort to seeing them through.
We have all been there and there is nothing wrong with that.
The only thing you need to realize is what is important to you. If you can’t dedicate your time to something, don’t waste your energy on it. It means that you are simply not invested in that particular goal for now or ever.
It is worth so much pursuing something that you are passionate about than putting in the effort simply because others are doing it.
We have been brain washed to believe that we can only achieve success if we are like so and so. But no matter how much you try pursuing what someone else has, you will never get anywhere. You will be starting something and giving up because that was not your dream in the first place.
Instead of chasing your own, you are trying to make come true someone else’s dreams.
Each one of us has a unique purpose in life. Find yours!
And on that note, remember that my timeline is not yours. Someone may get rich at 25 but that is them. Maybe your big break will come when you are 35 or 40, why hurry your life because you have been made to feel like you are not doing anything worthwhile with your life?

3. Having a vision is one great way of knowing where you are going
When you have no vision in your life, it is very easy to be swayed. There are so many people around you who seem to have direction of where your life should go and you are likely to fall into this belief if you don’t have anything steering you forward.
I am not talking about being rigid or not grabbing opportunities when they appear. I am talking about knowing yourself, who you are and what you want to achieve whether opportunities present themselves or not.
Define that future that you want clearly and make a commitment to work towards it.
Start seeing where exactly your curiosity lies. Find what makes you feel good in the moment. Determine where you want to be and who you want to become and start working towards that. Curve out a future for yourself because who you are today and how you spend your time will greatly affect your future. What kind of dreams will you start living today?
