Why YOLO Is No Longer Relevant Today
May 12, 2018
When it comes down to, what is life really all about? Is it not about making the most of the time you have?
Yes, but the concept of time today has been taken too literally. While seizing each moment such that none goes to waste may sound like a fair statement because let’s face it, we all have to make the most of the time we have, in real senses, YOLO has become an excuse to make rush decisions.
Living for the moment and acting on impulses since you only have one life to live if not careful is somewhat counterproductive.
And I have seen lives snuffed out just because of this concept.
Do not live for the moment
Usually when people talk about living for the moment, it is usually all about acting on our immediate desires, rather than choose what to do with those moments in order to serve some kind of purpose for us.
What you need to understand is that the future still matters and not just this moment. Whatever you do today has an effect on what your tomorrow will look like.
Live for the legacy instead
The concept of instant gratification has been instilled in us that a majority of our actions are to produce quick results.
Yet there is a need to slow down, not by wasting time or engaging in more work but by understanding the importance of your purpose as well as what is a priority in your life. In the end, what will you be remembered for?
Your life on earth should be defined by something great that you built for yourself, the true meaning of living a legacy.
You are likely to experience peace and happiness, not from immediate desires but by building a part of yourself in the world.
Don’t rush the person you want to become
I am not on social media a majority of the time but when I am, my Facebook feed is filled with all these people I went to school with who are either married or have kids. I am neither and it is not from lack of opportunity but in understanding that each one of us has their own timeline. If I am not where everyone else is, that is not something to depress about. I am where I am because I have chosen to be there and the same goes for them.
Do not rush through life just because you want to get to where you want to be fast. Just because that friend of yours already seems to have a perfect career or a family, doesn’t mean that time has passed on you. Rushing through life will only hurt you and you will find that most of the time, you will spend comparing yourself to others.
You don’t control the outcomes of your life, principles do
Our lives are governed by outside principles not our own actions. Our actions are just our way of controlling our lives but the rest is determined by our interaction with the outside world.
It is the small and sometimes even undetectable habits that accumulate and create the legacy of our lives – what is big is just small things done repeatedly.
This is why instead of living for the moment you should live for the work of your legacy.
